This is a very substantial and well-crafted Dirk (or large Sgian Dubh), finished in highly-polished wood-tone. The blade is serrated 440 Stainless steel, and the overall length is 9 inches and measures 1 1/2 inches wide at the hilt. A topaz (blue) stone adorns the top of the pommel.
The Scottish Dirk is the equivalant of the American Bowie knife*.
*A sgian dubh is a small (7" - 9") utility knife, traditionally worn concealed under the armpit but now worn ceremonially tucked into a stocking garter as a symbol of peace and friendship. A dirk was a short sword (15" - 20"), modelled in the Roman or Saxon tradition, held in the left hand with the shield for short stabbing encounters while the right hand wielded the sword. It was often made from a broken sword blade and enjoyed considerable symbolic value and utility in peacetime. Both were in use long before Jim Bowie commissioned his version of a frontier hunting knife, or in fact, long before there was an American frontier. [Thanks to R. Krehbiel, Prince George, British Columbia].
This is not a toy, and is not for young chidren. Sharp.
